Advanced textile recycling: Tanboer uses several recycled materials in this jacket, including recycled down and an outer fabric made from recycled airbag fabric.

Recycling is the future of the textile industry, because in the coming years, the focus will increasingly be on returning used materials to the production cycle and using them to make new products. This will also be required by law. With this lightweight transition jacket, Tanboer has demonstrated that there are a multitude of possibilities for this.

The outer fabric of the jacket is made of Nylon 66 from recycled airbags.

Airbag fabric recycling

What makes this waterproof, breathable and abrasion-resistant jacket so special is that the nylon 66 outer fabric is made from recycled airbags. The fabric is very strong, has a certain heat resistance and good wear resistance, and also has a unique texture and appearance. Another plus point: compared to other high-performance fabrics, the costs are lower. However, this was only made possible by a new method that facilitates the removal and recycling of used airbags. The recycled fabric is subject to strict controls to ensure high quality and performance. Each scrapped car contains almost 2200 grams of recyclable airbag fabric that can be recycled and regenerated. Almost 22,000 tonnes of fabric resources from airbag fabric can be made available every year.

The down filling is also made from recycled down.

Recycled down and even more recycled fibres

The jacket is filled with recycled down from used down jackets. Professional cleaning and treatment processes remove impurities and odours from the down, so that it once again achieves a quality and thermal insulation performance that closely resembles that of new down. In this way, Tanboer not only wants to reduce waste, but also to contribute to animal welfare by reducing dependence on new animal down.

In addition to recycled fabrics and down, other high-quality materials are used in this down jacket, such as resin zips, wear-resistant cuffs and windproof brims, to ensure that the clothing performs well in various harsh environments.

Designed for men, the jacket is perfect for everyday commuting and outdoor sports and will be available in March 2025.

What the jury said:

“It's great that Tanboer is putting the material from used airbags back into circulation and has found a practical solution for doing so that even has cost benefits. Recycling used down is also useful because it's far too good to throw away.”
