The Merrell Rogue Hiker is a backpacking boot for the serious backpackers out there. It serves those that want protection, great fit and grip while saving on weight. „Merrell’s roots are on the trail with a rich history in backpacking with boots like the Wilderness. But things have changed over the last 41 years which is what let us to develop the all new Rogue Hiker“ explains Merrell.
It is Merrell's lightest backpacking boot to date. „We set out to create the best backpacking boot in the world through three key elements: Lightness, traction and durability. Because when carrying the heavy pack, stability and tracking matter but so does every ounce. The market is filled with rugged, heavy backpacking boots, so we took a unique approach to the design.“
With the Rogue Hiker, Merrell has reacted to a growing number of hikers and backpackers using trail running shoes with a heavy pack because of their wish for lighter footwear. At the same time, they are forgoing the high ankle support and opening them up to injury. The Rogue Hiker caters to that group in terms of lightness while still providing full ankle support, as the lacing system locks the boot in place.
Besides the lightness of the new Rogue Hiker, the Merrell design team has also taken a different approach compared to a few of the other boots in the market. Instead of a traditional boot last, Merrell has also used the last of an athletic trail running shoe, inspired by their Agility Peak trail runner, so the Rogue Hiker also wears a lot like such. Paired with modern materials to reduce weight and enhance performance, this boot delivers for people who want to travel light and fast at 953 grams per pair. Meanwhile, it fits like a sneaker and is comfortable to wear even on multi-day hikes and longer backpacking adventures.
Equipped with Vibram Megagrip® outsole, traction is never a worry, even with a 15 kilo pack on your back. The sole is one of the grippiest on the market, even if conditions turn out to be a bit tricky because it is wet or slippery. A two-piece midsole construction with an ESS plate gives the wearer the support and safety they need to conquer wet or challenging terrain. The molded TPU heel counter locks the foot into place and adds to the lateral stability.
„All these things add to a boot with the durability of a pick-up truck with the light-weight performance of a sports car sure to be a disrupter in the market“, Merrell says. For thru hikers, multi-day tours but of course also on a day trip the Rouge makes up a great companion on the trail that keeps you safe while being super lightweight.
A Gore Tex ballistic mesh upper delivers lightweight protection and support a backpacker wants without the weight of leather when every ounce matters. Yet, the three season boot is durable and works well in all conditions, be it spring, summer or fall. The Merrell Rogue Hiker is quick to dry, provides good moisture management and it is water and windproof. Its bright orange colour and the overall design of the boot also speak to a younger audience as the Rogue Hiker is definitely not your grandfather’s backpacking boot. Its neon aesthetic will stand out in a sea of brown leather boots and will give this pack boot the attention it deserves.
