ISPO Award Nominee 2024: Kailas Fuga DU2

One of the most fundamental needs of trail runners and outdoor adventurers are shoes that provide powerful grip on uphill climbs and prevent slipping on downhill slopes. The Fuga DU2, developed by Kailas, is a trail-running shoe with exceptional grip and steep-slope stability. The ISPO Award jury evaluated the shoe at their meeting and praised its provision of “exceptional traction for a safer and more confident trail-running experience”.

Kailas is a climbing apparel and equipment company founded in Guangzhou, China, in 2003. The company is committed to “providing outdoor enthusiasts with ultralight products that help them climb higher, run faster, and trek further”. Central to the new Fuga DU2 design is the large full-rubber outsole (123/98mm) with a widened forefoot and heel that increases the contact area by 8 to 10% and improves the grip on uneven terrains. The outsole also features a 5-zone design with specific areas for traction, braking, lateral slip-resistance, independent shock-absorption, and mud-removal. Its 4mm deep triangular traction pattern ensures quick ground contact and precise grip. Emphasizing environmental friendliness and sustainability, the rubber is made by Vibram N-OIL eco-friendly compound, and the midsole incorporates 15% sugarcane residue.

The thickened midsole of the Kailas Fuga DU2 provides a rebound rate of 65 to 70%, ensuring sustained rebound and durability for long distances. Additionally, the TPU heel support frame delivers stability and support, reduces ankle pressure, and prevents injuries. Another important feature is the AWS 3.0 (Adjust Whole Sole) 2-section lace tightening system allowing for a customizable and secure fit: the first buckle helps to minimize impact to toes on downhills while the second buckle supplies stronger wrapping and stability.

The shoe’s careful design makes it an excellent choice not only for beginner trail runners but professional athletes facing more demanding conditions. The Kailas Fuga DU2 will be available from March 2025.
