Janja Garnbret has been dominating the climbing and bouldering scene for years. At the Olympic debut of her discipline in Tokyo, the Slovenian secured the gold medal. She has also qualified again for the 2024 Olympic Games. Here are 7 facts about Garnbret.

01

This is how Janja Garnbret dominates climbing

Slovenian climber Janja Garnbret has already won nearly every major title in her sport, including:

  • 8 World Cchampionship titles
  • 3 overall World Cup wins in lead climbing (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022).
  • 1 overall World Cup win in bouldering (2019)
  • 1 Gold and 2 silver medals at European Climbing Championships.

In 2018 and 2019, she was named Slovenia's female athlete of the year. She is the top favourite to win the climbing Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2021 Summer Games.

02

Historical series in bouldering

In 2019, Janja Garnbret achieved a first in the Boulder World Cup: she won all six World Cup competitions. No one in climbing has ever achieved that before. In total, she solved 74 of the 78 problems. Her bouldering winning streak only ended in Salt Lake City in 2021 after a total of nine victories in a row.

03

World record on the highest chimney in Europe

In 2020, Janja Garnbret made history together with Domen Skofic: Both climbed a route on the highest chimney in Europe in Srbovlje, Slovenia. The two climbed a route over the full 360 meters of the tower - the longest man-made climbing route in the world - on every pitch without falling within 7 hours and 32 minutes. But see for yourself...

04

Her boyfriend was also a world champion

Janja Garnbret's partner Domen Skofic is also a climber. He was there for the chimney world record. Skofic also won the Lead World Cup in 2016. The two met in 2013 on the Slovenian youth squad. "It's great that we both climb because we can help each other that way. I could imagine having a partner who doesn't climb as hard, but this way it fits better," Garnbret said in an interview with "Outdoor Magazine".

05

Climbing on the rock: Relaxation at difficulty 9a

Janja Garnbret also feels great on the rock. "For me, it's a break from the competition and training routine. I usually go rock climbing to relax," she says. And some of that is on routes of difficulty 9a: In 2017, she first climbed the Seleccio Natural in Santa Lina, Spain, and just two days later, the equally difficult route La Fabela pa la Enmienda. Her most difficult Onsight climb was at difficulty 8c. Garnbret's favorite climbing area back home is Misja Pec: "It keeps up with the in areas in Spain in terms of route quality."

06

Training in her own climbing hall

Janja Garnbret's partner Domen Skofic and his father built the "Climbing Ranch" on their own: A huge climbing hall with lead walls, boulder problems and speed climbing terrain. No wonder that Janja Garnbret also trains here. She trains a total of five days a week according to a strict training schedule.
