The Shark Attack Mitigation System (SAMS) is a patented technology for water sports apparel that’s meant to reduce the risk of shark attacks. The Australian inventors were awarded in the “Sportswear” category at ISPO BRANDNEW in 2014. Now the Californian surfboard manufacturer Rusty aims to launch a surfboard line with the unusual pattern.
The surfboards will initially only be available in Australia and New Zealand. Whether sales will be expanded to Europe is still not determined.
Anti-shark wetsuit successful at ISPO BRANDNEW
How does the innovation work? The sample is said to irritate sharks’ eyesight. Sharks turn away from black and white prey because they’ve learned that fish with these colors don’t taste good, claim the developers.
In 2013 Shark Mitigation Systems, which cooperated with the University of Western Australia in development, first presented wetsuits meant to reduce the probability of a shark attack against surfers and swimmers. In addition to the zebra pattern, there is also a camouflage wetsuit meant to make water athletes more difficult for sharks to detect.
